Develop a model for wind assisted propulsion. Investigate how new wind assisted propulsion systems such as rotor sails can be modeled. The model shall be used for predicting the added propulsion force using weather forecasts a decided route alternative.
The result from the thesis will be a model and an evaluation of the accuracy for this model. The work will mainly be done in Python or Matlab using traditional modelling methods and/or machine learning. In the case of ML we prefer a grey-box approach to be able to verify the different parameters.
There are theories that the optimized rpm and pitch combination can be detected by sound. Investigate if a sound pattern can be correlated with the optimized performance of the propeller.
The result from the thesis will be a model and an evaluation of the accuracy for this model.

There is a lot of data available from ships from all kinds of different sensors. Can this data be used for helping ship owners/ship managers? For example:
- Hull fouling is one of the biggest issues for the shipping industry. Could available data be used to identify when actions should be taken to clean the hull?
- Engine maintenance is costly and should be done before engine failure occurs. Could available data be used to identify when actions should be taken for engine maintenance?
The result from the thesis will be easy to understand dashboards, with conclusions of when necessary service actions should be taken on the ship.
Power plan route optimization
Weather routing is today the general approach to route selection to minimize fuel consumption. However, to minimize the necessary power needed from a port to port voyage is the optimized route for fuel savings.
Investigate if a model could be develop for generating a route that minimize the power used for the voyage
How can route optimizations be improved from using actual data compared to data from forecasts?
Investigate how real time data can be shared between vessels on the same sea or area to improve route optimization.
Analyze the impact of exhaust temperature
Find out if there is any correlation between exhaust temperature and engine performance.
Done with the help of Grafana dashboards and collection of data from signals delivered from vessel.
Projects ideas to be defined in more detail
- Productification of Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) route planner
- Analyze data from an EcoPilot implementation to find out why fuel savings exceed predictions for this particular ship
- Cleaning of daily reports written manually and create a tool to analyze fuel reports
- Analyze and present AIS data
- Optimizing production flow internally at Qtagg, concentrating on stockkeeping and logistics
- Freight optimization
