EcoPilot - Fuel optimization

Experience fuel optimization with EcoPilot. EcoPilot cuts fuel costs and controls emissions from your ships. It provides active, automated eco-driving, based on your target: arrival time, fuel consumption, CII value or ship speed.

Fuel optimization with active eco-driving

EcoPilot can calculate an optimal propulsion plan for your route, based on a ship digital twin, real-time weather data and sea state information. EcoPilot interfaces with the sip’s propulsion system to execute the propulsion plan through continuous, active adjustments of enine speed, propeller pitch and shaft power.

You can expect fuel savings of at least 5-7% without any slow steaming. Your ETA remains the same. Add improved ship-to-shore collaboration, elimination of hurry-up-and-wait behaviour and fuel savings may be as high as 20%.

EcoPilot control modes for fuel optimization

We understand that you have your own specific priorities and that they may sometimes change over time or due to the circumstances. EcoPilot provides four different control modes to accomodate this.

Set your target value and the others will be calculated for you. Once you are satisfied, EcoPilot will execute the optimal fuel optimization propulsion plan, based on your prioritized target for the voyage.

Interislander Kaitaki

Kaitaki is a Ro-Ro passenger ship operating in the Cook Strait between New Zealands two main islands (Wellington-Picton). EcoPilot optimizes the ship’s propulsion throughout each voyage to save fuel and secure timely arrival regardless of weather conditions or occasional departure delays.

DFDS Primula Seaways

”With EcoPilot we save 6% in fuel consumption. EcoPilot will help us reduce ETS costs and achieve a better CII rating.” - Jan Blak, Superintendent at DFDS

Tallink Isabelle

"Tallink is continuously evaluating innovative technologies to improve our operations. We invest in collaboration with research institutions and encourage all crew of Tallink ships to introduce innovations that bring energy, fuel, and water savings. Decreased emissions & CII management

When you use EcoPilot for active eco-driving, fuel consumption and emissions decrease in a predictable manner. Using EcoPilot’s CII mode it is possible to plan and execute a voyage based on a target CII value. You will also get information about the ship’s accumulated CII rating year-to-date.

Using EcoPilot yuou can reduce fuel comspumtion in a reliable, predictable manner, even without slow-steaming.

How it works

EcoPilot uses a fully digital work process. Import your planned route from your ECDIS or passage plan system and EcoPilot will provide an optimized propulsion plan for your voyage, based on ship data, real-time weather data and sea state information.

EcoPilot interfaces with the ship’s propulsion system to automatically execute the correct engine speed and propeller pitch to balance shaft power. The propulsion plan is continuously re-calculated over
the course of the voyage based on actual performance and new weather forecasts.

Implementation of EcoPilot fuel optimization

EcoPilot can be installed on both older and more modern ships.

Where there is an existing digital PLC system, EcoPilot is implemented with an integration to the propulsion system via the PLC. Average installation time is about 2-3 days.

On ships where there is no PLC system to integrate with, the DEGO IV digital engine governor is installed, to facilitate active and optimized eco-driving. This requires extra installation work.
